The story of the house
In 1999, Leana Greene, founder of Santa Monica Studio, purchased the Thalberg Estate with a vision: to restore its timeless beauty while honoring its Hollywood legacy. At the time, the house had passed through several owners since Irving Thalberg and Norma Shearer, and much of its original charm had been lost, hidden beneath shag carpet and aluminum sliding doors.
Leana partnered with renowned architect Richard Landry to undertake a thoughtful, respectful renovation. Together, they reimagined the estate with a refined European sensibility, infusing it with a Swedish-inspired aesthetic that brightened its Tudor roots. The dark wood interiors were replaced with blonde finishes, soft natural light, and carefully curated textures.
Determined to blend history with heart, Leana traveled extensively through her home country of Sweden, sourcing antique furniture, vintage finds, and hand-selected pieces that now fill the home with character and warmth.
She raised her three children here, surrounded by art, nature, and the ocean. Now, after decades of careful stewardship, she has chosen to open the doors of this private, beachfront estate for a limited number of curated events—inviting others to create meaningful memories in a home that holds nearly a century of history, love, and legacy
